We all know that our desires can be satisfied is only an illusion. In fact, in reality, it is actually insatiable and keeps demanding more and more”.
When I allowed my thoughts to linger on that subject, I felt why it is insatiable and finally came to a conclusion on how my desires should be-based on Sri Karmayogi’s writings.
When I thought why actually a desire arises, the essence of the all answer that I got is., to satisfy a need, which may be physical, vital, mental – now a days even spiritual.
In other words, I want to possess something that is expected to give pleasure or benefit or growth etc, like wealth gains, physical pleasures, spiritual powers etc., That desire may be based on a person, on object, a circumstance or an event. It may be anything. Further, if I think more, on how I am getting the happiness out of desire, it is always till I have attraction towards that desire. Or till I’m attracted towards that kind of pleasure. Here at one view, we can say that my desires are satisfied. Still more, if I have same desires but no more, I get pleasures from same person, object or circumstances or event I look for other persons, object, circumstances, and event with same desire with attraction to different set of things. So, I think it is only an attraction –say a magnetism of the things which we expect to give pleasure attracts mind to experience the pleasure.
That is why one that gives happiness to one person is not necessarily giving pleasure to another. Similarly, the same objects or events that gave the happiness earlier, may not give same pleasure in another circumstances-making me crave for more and more and develop desire. The attraction can be envisaged as force that connects us to objects of the desire. If it singularly gives pleasure to one part of the being, we term it as general like. If it is mixed with emotions or the knowledge, the grade moves from likes to passion to lust. For example, general desire for music then mixed with emotion in romantic mood with beloved, with observation of senses mind can be compared to that- though sex is best example for these kinds of analogies to understand.
So apart from physical body we are also trying to satisfy our vital body, mental body, and spiritual body. Desire for emotional satisfaction is for vital body. Desire for satisfaction for ego is for mental body can be compared to the different types of hunger of the physical body. As we have changed the hunger for food to taste of the tongue, we have changed every other part of the body and its designated desires and resultant pleasures. So, what happened is, all types of pleasure which we desire, have become only a part – as all are for different parts of the body. To co-ordinate all the pleasure for spiritual body- rather for spirit -is missing from making it as a whole -which is “Aanandha”-ranging from bliss to ecstasy.
So, we can assume that joy of the spirit added to our desire makes it as final and so by that, desires can be satisfied or in our terms we can be contended, because spirit don’t have dualistic attraction. Based on Life Divine we can even say that the desire now is only of divine to experience that form of “Aanandha”. The person’s desire and the object or event he wants to enjoy –being different-makes that duality and based on his craving it leads to passion or lust –which in turn leads to greed, envy, possessiveness which again leads to the external deeds as lies, frauds, fighting, fear, anger and what not.
I think that is why religions asks us to shed the desire and Buddha said desire is the basis of karma and sufferings. The insatiable nature of our desire is because, what we enjoy is part of the “Aanandha” but as a whole we are searching for divine “Aanandha”. This comes only by living in the moment”. Because when we think of our desire, we always think of future pleasure comparing with the experience of past pleasure. We can notice that unconsciously we enjoy in a moment only-the maximum-at the point of -or at the instant of acquisition of our object of desire.
So to make it easier for me to “live in the moment” For all practical purpose I understand it as,” doing the thing what I am meant for- without thinking of the results and taking all results as spirits enjoyment. In this way future is eliminated. This has an inbuilt knowledge that my past experience not necessarily should give same result or pleasure, as I don’t think of end. So, it eliminates past. Our desires are based on our goals with stress on physical needs, security, survival, feeling of importance, appreciation, freedom, knowledge, power, fame, realization etc. Living in the moment is one way of shedding the desires and accepting the desires of the sprit which we can say as the entry point of transformation.
Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Tantra, and Raja Yoga are the main lines of Indian Yoga. In all these yoga’s, the system chooses one part and purifies it through austerities. Purification leads to the liberation of that Purusha, the Purusha of that part. All Indian Yogas use one part of the human being. Purna Yoga uses all the parts of the being-mind, vital and body-and seeks the release of Psychic being from the domination of nature, the Prakriti. It is called Purna Yoga because its instrument is the whole being. In the tradition we use one part to liberate the whole. This being an arduous task, naturally serious austerities are called for. Asanas, Pranayama, Japa, Mantra, Tantra, etc. are resorted to.
In Purna Yoga, as the whole being is the instrument and we are not the human being but the Divine Itself, the path is broad. Hence all narrow austerities are avoided. Methods needed here are sincerity which changes desires to aspiration of the spirit. As mind is the highest subject tool we have, we have to make its object tool “Will” to act on “Mind” which bring out the hidden knowledge of the spirit. As making “Will act on Mind” for transformation is “sincerity’- which is an aspect of the spirit, which acts as medium of the spirit. It is natural that higher part has effect on lower part. Taking the desire of the spirit is graded in many levels- from expansiveness to renouncing of individual salvation and lends its liberated status as an instrument for the greater fulfilment of the Divine intention. So In short transforming our desires to desires of the sprit which is Aspiration makes it satiable.
The following lines from Sri Karmayogi- makes the points more clear:
- “Let Thy will be done…. is the best form to make spirits desires as our desires.
- Conscious desire- to be an instrument of Mother, lets the desire lends itself to transformation more readily than subconscious desire. Because controlling desire is “Behaviour”. Understanding its nature and desire and to give it up is “Culture”. As the first is mental control of raw energy and the next is education of the “vital” it changes the direction of the desire which is transformation.
- Desireless enjoyment generates “Aananda” and can take it to its acme. In practical terms man can do everything he does actuated by desire without desire for enjoyment.
- Desire to possess anything is obvious expression of ego. Capacity to withdraw from it and think that as duty to Divine is the surest sign of ego giving a way.
- This is a world where everybody takes away what is not their due. But “MOTHER” wants “NOT” to desire for things that is due to us.
- Savithri conquered death inwardly. We can conquer our desire by concentrating energy on consecration.
- All desires are petty. There is no special petty desire. Desire fulfils itself in its pettiness. Desire when transformed is delight giving energy.
- The best transformation is surrendering the desire to “understand” anything by mind.
- What is desire to ego, is Bliss to the spirit. When ego refuse to possess the desire, the Psychic transforms it into the delight of the Being.
