Sri Karmayogi says – Self Giving is the best way to bring Higher Consciousness to the surface. As it is not a single value and as it includes good-will, magnanimity, generosity, and other valuable personality traits – the result and evolution it gives is enormous.
Sri Karmayogi gives the following as examples for self-giving for a person in a family.
For those whose first expense will be his need, friend, party after receiving salary – a rupee spent for a family member first is starting self-giving. For those who tell lies to wife – start telling the truth is self-giving. He says this, because only from these humble beginnings – in an area where we take all granted – a true meaning of the values and principles as way to higher consciousness and spiritual individuality is understood. Take other values like- non reaction, expansiveness, patience…. The process is same.
We can understand the real meaning of any values:
- Only when we outgrow the charm of forms, social or psychological attached to it when we practice it.
- Only when we shed the opinions, prejudices and expectations related to the practice.
- Only when the wisdom acquired develops as ripened maturity as character of higher consciousness.
- Now even this wisdom losing its essence of experiences and knowledge to the Divine Wisdom of the content.
I want more percentage of incentive and raise in all emoluments for me self-giving should be giving more of what my boss wants. Secondly, If I have an idea that makes money; will I tell anyone that I have an idea, come let’s make money? No I think, because I want to have more money before giving it to someone else. Third, If I feel alone or need somebody to chat or share a thought then a thought comes, whether I am really giving the same time to others and those who need me or wanted to spend time with me. Not only in all these- If I analysis every day of my life it is always, I get more while ensuring that I don’t give more.
So in simple words to initiate self-giving in ourselves, first of all, I think, we should give first what we have to give to all around us- to expand their happiness and not to give what others don’t want. So, in giving we receive. This creates goodwill towards us which in turn generates prosperity. This being selfish self-giving. from here we should go to the second level -to realize that the Divine should expand in those peoples life and for that purpose I am coming forward to give my work, thought, money, enjoyment etc.
Some other examples of sel-giving are:
Pleasing a person by recognizing the truth in the opposite point of view the other person has.
Acting perfectly normal after doing a great favour or help as if we don’t even remember that we have done a great favour.
Praising somebody without jealousy or ill will when he achieved something substantial. The list will be endless if we can list out all the possibilities of self-giving.
But Sri Karmayogi puts everything in a nut-shell on what is minimum self-giving expected of a Mother Devotee:
• Give 100% to all duties and commitments – work, relationship etc.
• Do not do anything, that you don’t want others to do to you.
Not only for self-giving, any spiritual value for that matter – has to be started from the nearest one.
